Uruguay Independent Means Visa

 

The Uruguayan Independent Means Visa allows you to legally reside in Uruguay if you can prove you have an income of approximately $1,500 USD per month.

This visa is a permanent residency that has a typical application period of 6 to 18 months. you are allowed to reside in Uruguay during the application process.

This visa typically makes you eligible to apply for citizenship in five years after the permanent residency has been granted.

Proof of income can come from any foreign source including pension, social security, remote employment, business income. The income must be verified by an escribano, a legal professional, in Uruguay.

Independent Means Visa holders may establish a business in Uruguay or work as a self employed individual, but may not work as employees for an Uruguayan company.

Notes

  1. The complete application process typically takes 6 to 18 months… plan accordingly.
  2. It is possible to leave Uruguay while  your visa is in process. 
  3. You will typically become a tax resident only if you spend more than 183 days per year in Uruguay.
